We’ve always been huge fans of Kennebunkport’s superb White Barn Inn, with its white-glove service and überchic cooking. But when we were looking for a less heady—albeit equally service-minded—retreat, we headed to the White Barn’s seaside outpost, Breakwater Inn & Spa . Perched at the mouth of the Kennebunk River, the Breakwater is the perfect spot from which to set out and explore. As for us, we sampled a divine massage at the inn’s next-door spa, chatted with the glamorous manager, and retreated to our terrace before stepping out to enjoy the cod with a bacon and leek ragout at Stripers restaurant.
